Abstract

Despite the impact sector's stated commitment to equity, significant diversity gaps persist. This report analyses demographic data from 340+ companies on our platform, comparing representation across roles, seniority levels, and cause categories to identify where progress is real and where it falls short.

Key Findings

  • Impact companies outperform tech industry averages for gender diversity at entry level (52% vs 36%) but trail at C-suite level (24% vs 28%).
  • Racial and ethnic diversity varies dramatically by cause category, with health-tech leading and climate-tech lagging.
  • Companies with dedicated DEI budgets show 2.1x faster improvement in representation metrics.
  • Blind resume screening increased interview diversity by 35% on our platform without reducing hiring quality scores.

The impact sector has a unique opportunity -- and responsibility -- to model the equitable practices it advocates for. This report asks: is the sector living up to that promise?

Using anonymised demographic data from our platform, supplemented by voluntary employer surveys, we benchmark representation across four dimensions: gender, race and ethnicity, disability, and socioeconomic background.

The findings are mixed. At entry level, impact companies generally outperform broader tech industry averages, particularly on gender representation. However, the "broken rung" problem persists: representation drops sharply at each seniority level, with the C-suite remaining predominantly homogeneous.

We identify actionable interventions at each pipeline stage. For sourcing, blind screening and diverse slate requirements show the strongest evidence. For retention, sponsorship programmes (distinct from mentorship) and transparent promotion criteria are most effective. For leadership, board diversity requirements and succession planning are critical.
